While interning at Sandhills Publishing in the summer of 2018, I designed a Machinery Trader Auction Results mock-ad for Thompson Tractor. I employed my skills in photo editing, typography and informational organization to complete this project.
A bit of a background: Thompson Tractor is a Caterpillar dealer for Alabama and northwest Florida and the Hyundai forklift dealer for most of Georgia. Machinery Trader Auction Results (MTAR) is a bi-annual publication which details the results of Sandhills’ many hosted auctions for heavy equipment.
While it was decided that this mock-ad would not be published in the then current edition of MTAR, I still believe it to show off my graphic design skills particularly well, especially in regards to Photoshop.
Thompson Tractor encouraged me to use elements of design from their website, so I did just that. The image on top was taken from their website. I wanted the log loader in the foreground to pop, so I applied a black and white filter as well as an asphalt overlay drawn from the website to the background. This created a much better contrast between the background and the foreground, while also giving the photo a more rugged quality.
The text I need to include was provided to me by Thompson Tractor. My job was to organize it in an uncluttered and sensical way. Concerning the typefaces, I found fonts that imitated closely those found on the Thompson Tractor website and that conformed to Sandhills Publishing's standards for printed ads. In this case, the primary font ended up being Helvetica Neue. The texture that appears behind the bottom text was also taken from Thompson Tractor's website. However, I made the scratches on it more prominent by darkening them.
